Communication is the art in which you express yourself to others. Individuals with learning disabilities cannot communicate with people as they cannot express themselves normally. Thus, while you communicate with individuals with learning disability you have to know their language, which is primarily love and then read on.

When you communicate with someone who has learning disabilities remember that your body language, tone and voice will play a vital role. With them communication is not just talking, you have to listen carefully what they are trying to express.

Every individual is unique and thus the mode of communication with each of them should also be unique.

What is communication?

Communication is the way you express yourself to another person and make them understand your thoughts.

There can be many more definitions to this but what is most important is the way that you pass on information from one person to another.

When it comes to people with learning disabilities the way you communicate will not be same as the way when you do with another human being.

Facing difficulty in communication

Individuals with learning disabilities face many difficulties while communicating. Think yourself in situation when

·  you are not able to read this

·  you not get the words that you want to say

·  no sound comes out of your mouth even when you are opening it

·  the words are all jumbled up

·  the sounds are not right

·  you do not understand the signs and symbols around you

·  not able to write what you are thinking or your ideas

·  People ignores you and do not want to understand what you are trying to say.

Understand these situation and you can work on communication with these special people.

Being a good communication partner

Once you start understanding the problems faced by individuals with learning disabilities you can start the process of being a good communicator with these people who wants to communicate but needs time for that.

You have to understand their pace, how they are expressing. Every time they won’t be suing words to express, their body language and tone will say a lot of words that are untold. You have to understand them and go ahead with them, make them feel comfortable, let them understand you care.

In order to make your communication work you should

·  Use language that is accessible. It is better not to use jargons and long words that may be tough for them to understand.

·  Try to find out if the person has certain physical disabilities that is stopping them from communicating.

·  Communicate with them face to face, and slowly so that they understand what you say.

·  In you are writing something for them make sure that you use bigger text that is easy to read. Do not much colors as they may get baffled.

·  Avoid places for communicating where there may be some distractions.

·  Be specific with your questions that need answers in simple words, if possible yes or no.

·  Try to understand their body language they may be expressing a lot of things with that.
